Mack Brown Texas Future: Coach Refutes Reports That He Is Stepping Down; Attorney Says Future in Brown's Hands [VIDEO]

In the latest twist to "As the Longhorns Turn," Texas coach Mack Brown now has denied media reports that he will not return to coach the team in 2014.

The website Orangebloods.com first reported that two high-level sources said that Brown is stepping down after 16 seasons as Texas head coach.

"Mack Brown loves Texas and wants what's in the best interest of Texas and what's in the best interest of Mack Brown," one high-level source told Orangebloods.com. "I don't think it's been an easy decision. But he doesn't want negativity around the program he helped unify."

Later in the day, Brown said that report was a bunch of poppycock, according to ESPN.com.

"I haven't seen [the] article," Brown wrote in a text message to the website Horns247. "I'm in Florida recruiting. If I had decided to step down, I sure wouldn't be killing myself down here. I have not decided to step down."

ESPN also reported that it confirmed that Brown not notified the school that he is stepping down.

Brown has a 158-47 record at the school, including a 2005 national championship. But he has been just 30-20 in the last four seasons, beginning a year after Texas played Alabama for the BCS championship.

Multiple media reports indicate that the university's board of regents will hold a meeting Thursday and discuss the future of president Bill Powers. Brown's fate may be determined during that meeting as well.

Sources told ESPN, however, that any announcement on Brown's future likely would not come until next week.

Additionally, the Associated Press is reporting that Brown's attorney, Joe Jamail said his client has not resigned and that Brown will decide his future, according to a USA TODAY Sports report.
