The Seattle Seahawks have made one of the first major moves with the NFL trade deadline approaching.
The Seahawks have acquired veteran defensive lineman Leonard Williams from the New York Giants, who was a Pro Bowl selection in 2016.
In exchange, the Giants will be compensated with a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
The 29-year-old has contributed 21 tackles, five quarterback hits, one tackle for loss, and 1.5 sacks in eight games this season for New York.
After achieving a career-high 11.5 sacks in 2020, the former first-round pick has accumulated 10.5 sacks for the past two-and-a-half seasons.
"We've watched him for a long time and have known him for a good while, a Trojan and all that. He's a fantastic football player. He's the kind of guy that can make a difference in games. He's really a nice player," Seahawks coach Pete Caroll said about the former USC standout.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, October 31, at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
Leonard Williams says goodbye to New York
The trade signifies the end of Williams' nine-season stretch in The Big Apple, during which he considered MetLife Stadium in New Jersey his home field.
The defensive lineman was initially picked by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, selected as the sixth overall.
He played for the Jets from 2015 to 2019 and subsequently for the Giants from 2019 to 2023.
