Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder will not intervene if coach Mike Shanahan decides to bench prized quarterback Robert Griffin III for the remainder of the season, according to ESPN.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, the veteran coach raised the possibility of essentially ending the battered second-year quarterback's season with three games remaining. Over the team's last five games, Griffin has been sacked an astounding 24 times.
Shanahan, whose own job security is also the subject of much debate, told ESPN he will make his decision by Wednesday. If Griffin is pulled, second-year quarterback Kirk Cousins is primed to take over.
After publicly stating he felt it was in Griffin's best interest to get as many reps as possible this season to compensate for missing the entire preseason recuperating from a torn ACL, Shanahan now seems convinced his best interest might lie in simply retooling for next season.
Shanahan has one year and $7 million left on his contract. The Redskins are 24-37 under his watch and are already assured of posting their third double-digit loss season in his four years as coach.
On Tuesday, team officials pronounced hi standing with the team as "status quo."
