Dallas Cowboys placekicker Brandon Aubrey came out big in their wire-to-wire victory against the Los Angeles Chargers to the delight of quarterback Dak Prescott.

Aubrey, a former Major League Soccer player, converted the field goal in the fourth quarter against the Chargers to give his team a precarious 20-17 lead. The Los Angeles club never recovered since.

The rookie stays perfect on his field goals, draining all 16.

Aubrey saves the day for the Cowboys without being too loud or hogging the spotlight.

His quarterback, Prescott, can't help but be in awe, even giving Aubrey an apt nickname.

"He's butter. Butter Aubrey," Prescott said post-game. "Smooth. Always has been since the day that he showed up."

How did Aubrey land with the Cowboys from soccer?

Aubrey was watching an American football game with his wife in 2019 when the latter told him he was just as capable as the placekicker who missed a field goal in that game.

He listened to the wife, trained with a former Mississippi State kicker and kicking coach, Brain Egan, and eventually landed a placekicker role with the Birmingham Stallions in the 2022 USFL draft.

He was released by the Stallions in July this year and was picked up by the Cowboys.

The team got veteran Brett Maher as a placekicker last season. Two weeks into the pre-season, they waived remaining kicker Tristan Vizcaino, opening up a room for Aubrey.

Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones knew Aubrey's background, but he believed gambling on the 28-year-old was worth it.

"Because sometimes I've seen what happens when you go into one with someone who's kicked before and I didn't like that. That doesn't necessarily ensure you anything."
