The Texas Rangers have been firing on all cylinders this post-season, but they can still get better as Max Scherzer is yet to join the team in the playoffs.
How close is he to pitching again? Manager Bruce Bochy thinks Scherzer is recovering well after a throwing session on Wednesday. However, he did not divulge whether he will play against Houston.
"Max is doing well here. He had a nice outing, threw 60 pitches, in that area," Bochy told reporters during an evening workout at Globe Life Field.
"We have some time here before we set the roster, but I have to be really encouraged with how he threw the ball, how he feels."
Scherzer is a mid-season trade acquisition by the Rangers in exchange for Luisangel Acuña.
He last pitched for the Rangers on September 12 in a game he was not able to finish due to a teres major strain. He was subsequently shut down for the rest of the season.
Rangers have no short supply of pitchers
Bochy's team appears fine despite not having Scherzer in the line-up, with several pitchers stepping up big-time for the Rangers.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi delivered major strikeouts in the last two series.
Still, Bochy is not closing doors for Scherzer and Jon Gray, who is also out with forearm strain.
"I'll put him in a holding pattern, too, for the next couple of days, see where we're at as we set this roster," Bochy said. "These guys are going to throw. We'll continue to evaluate them, see where we're at."
