The world's top pound-for-pound fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr., is reportedly close to announcing his next opponent. Many boxing observers are of the mind that Amir Khan will be the next fighter to try and dethrone "Money," but if that's the case even Khan doesn't know it yet.
"I swear to God, I've left that up to Golden Boy," Khan said. "I just told them, 'Yes, I would fight him,' and left it up to Golden Boy to maybe get it done. "I would tell you what, I wish that I could get an answer from them because I'm in the same boat as you guys. I don't know myself.
"At the end of the day, Floyd Mayweather's the boss, and he is going to announce who he's going to fight. I understand that he might do it this week. Let's see. At the end of the day, styles make fights... I think that there's a 60 percent chance that it could happen, at the end of the day."
Some have questioned Khan's credentials for earning such a lucrative opportunity, when an undefeated fighter like Danny Garcia, who owns a knockout over Khan, is being passed over. Khan disagrees with that logic though, pushing the narrative of "styles make fights," and also citing his large British fan base.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer agrees with Khan in that regard.
"One thing that we know is that it seems like size and power is not really going to help to solve the Floyd Mayweather puzzle. So maybe the one thing that can solve it is speed and skill. I'm not going to say that Amir Khan's skills are better than Floyd Mayweather's skills, because I believe that Floyd is, maybe, the most skilled fighter of any generation and of all time. He's just the smartest guy in the ring," said Schaefer.
Another knock on Khan is a lack of experience above 140 lbs., but Khan disputes that notion strongly. "I will tell you something, and you probably won't believe this, but I'm a huge 140-pounder and I'm still a big 147-pounder."
