New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner delivered a strong message during a meeting between team officials last week at Tampa, which included general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone.

Steinbrenner encouraged the officials to be open to challenging everything, including the team's philosophies and practices, while emphasizing the importance of doing so in a respectful manner.

"I want you to challenge each other. I want you to critique each other. Check your egos at the door," the 53-year-old executive said.

The Yankees concluded the 2023 season with 82 wins and 80 losses, finishing fourth place in the American League East - their worst record since the 1992 season. They also failed to reach the postseason for the first time since 2016.

This occurred despite a payroll projected at $281 million, the second-highest in MLB, and an estimated luxury tax bill of $31 million.

Changes within the Yankees organization inevitable

Steinbrenner hinted that there would be changes within the Yankees organization during an interview at Sportico's Invest in Sports conference on Wednesday, October 11.

"We're going to be making some changes. Some may be more subtle than others, but I think we've uncovered certainly things we can do better," the Yankees owner said.

Despite this statement, it is expected that both Cashman and Boone will retain their positions as general manager and manager while the remainder of the baseball club will undergo a thorough evaluation.
