The Los Angeles Lakers appear solid on paper, meaning their success for the 2023-24 NBA season will depend on how head coach Darvin Ham will handle the team.
At the top of the list are LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Health is a main concern, although Ham is looking beyond that - especially for "The Brow."
Most are aware that the eight-time All-Star has repeatedly aired his preference to play the power forward position rather than center, Sports Illustrated reported.
This has been a point of contention among critics, although a recent revelation by the 50-year-old coach could point towards that being a reality.
"I have requested to see six three-point attempts a game," Ham told reporters, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "Three per half, at least. I wouldn't put that on him if I didn't think he was capable."
Should the 6-foot-10 cager prove he can do that, Ham may turn to other players on the roster to man the slot. Two names that come to mind are Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood.
Anthony Davis has work to do
Since entering the league in 2012, the three-point region has not been immediately associated with Davis. He owns a career three-point percentage of 30% per Statmuse. His best three-point shooting year was during the 2017-18 NBA season, where he shot 34% from beyond the arc.
Hence, Ham's challenge is new for Davis to focus on. If he is bent on playing the four position, this could be his ticket to doing so, although it may still depend on certain situations where the Lakers may opt to play with a small-ball lineup.
