The Golden State Warriors have decided on NBA veteran Dwight Howard, who worked out with the team recently.
The Warriors decided not to invite the eight-time All-Star to training camp on Friday, September 22, the San Francisco Chronicle reported through a league source.
The front office's decision may surprise some, considering Dwight Howard got the backing of the veterans in the Warriors roster. However, Golden State feels it would be better for them to keep the two open roster spots heading into training camp.
This means that the Warriors appear fine with their crop of big men. Kevon Looney will be the starting center for the team this season, with Draymond Green, Dario Saric, and rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis alternating in the middle.
Also, it appears the Warriors have opted to look for an extra wing player heading into training camp, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported. As of this writing, there is no official word on who the Dubs are targeting.
Could the Dubs pursue Buddy Hield?
One name that could make sense for the Warriors is Buddy Hield of the Indiana Pacers. The 30-year-old is currently being shopped, and his talent could provide the Dubs added firepower.
However, with the money owed to Hield, the Warriors may have to give up a player to make room. Chris Paul, along with his $30.8 million deal, could be that guy.
But doing so is considered a big downgrade for the Warriors, Peter O'Keefe of Blue Man Hoop suggested. Hence, the chances of Hield joining the Dubs are not high.
As for Howard, expect the one-time NBA champion to keep trying and see if he can still latch on to an NBA team for the coming 2023-24 season.
