The New England Patriots are adding depth to the quarterback position while reducing an option for the Cincinnati Bengals.

The six-time Super Bowl champions will be signing Will Grier to their 53-man active roster off the practice squad of the Bengals.

The 28-year-old spent the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as a backup to Dak Prescott.

Grier was let go by Dallas at the end of last month to make room for 2021 NFL draft third-overall pick Trey Lance, whom the Cowboys acquired in a trade.

Amid his impending release, the Cowboys let Grier start during their final preseason game to help boost his chances of being signed by another team.

He put up 29-of-35 pass completions, 305 passing yards, 53 rushing yards, 2 touchdown passes, and 2 rushing touchdowns, with zero interceptions in his final game as a Cowboy.

The Bengals quickly signed him on their practice squad a few days later.

Bengals thin on quarterback options

The Bengals will need more passers on the team after star QB Joe Burrow reaggravated his calf injury during their Week 2 loss against the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday, September 17.

Head coach Zac Taylor said that the 2022 Pro Bowl selection remains day-to-day.

With Burrow uncertain for their Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams this coming Monday, September 25, the Bengals only have Jake Browning as their healthy quarterback available.
