Defenseman Matthew Robertson was once touted as a top prospect who could make a name for himself in the NHL. The New York Rangers seemed like a perfect fit, considering they are a team that invests heavily in defense.
Selected in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft, it appeared to make sense for Robertson and that it would only be a matter of time before the Canadian could crack the New York Rangers rotation and fulfill his dream during a media availability in 2022 via the New York Rangers YouTube channel.
But fast-forward to the present, Matthew Roberson continues to be stuck in the minors. Worse, he is in the final year of his entry-level contract that he signed back in 2019. This puts him in a compromising position, although he does not appear worried about his situation.
When asked if it was a wakeup call, Robertson remained confident of his chances of realizing his NHL dream, the New York Post reported.
"Not looking forward, not living in the past. It's just [about] getting better each day. Just staying confident, working on little things after practice to help with my confidence, building on each day. Not trying to be too hard on myself," the Canadian hockey player said after the first day of rookie camp on Wednesday.
One possible issue for Robertson is that he has not been known to be a physical player and is overmatched. These are things that the Canadian will need to figure out, not purely on defense, but in other aspects of his game that drew the admiration of Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News.
Matthew Robertson has this season to find that out. Failure to do so may snuff all hopes of him making it to the New York Rangers roster.
