The Houston Rockets are reportedly done with Kevin Porter Jr. and are discussing potential NBA trade scenarios with different teams, according to league sources.
The Rockets have allegedly reached out to multiple unnamed NBA teams, adding draft compensation as an incentive to get a Kevin Porter Jr. trade done, The Athletic reported.
The 23-year-old is in the first year of a four-year $82.5 million contract extension that was agreed on in October 2022, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported. However, only $15.86 million of that contract is guaranteed, meaning the Rockets can release the controversial guard whenever they deem it necessary without further pay, Shams Charania added.
Houston is looking for a player who can immediately contribute to them for the 2023-24 NBA season. No teams or names have surfaced as of this writing, and the Rockets are reportedly keeping all their options open.
Porter is facing felony assault and strangulation charges tied to an incident involving former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick.
The 23-year-old Porter pleaded not guilty to the charges that happened on Monday, September 11, in a New York City hotel room at the Millenium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan, the Associated Press reported.
The assault left Gonrezick with a fractured neck vertebra and a deep cut above the 26-year-old's right eye.
Porter was released after posting a $75,000 bail or $100,000 bond. He was also ordered to stay away from Gondrezick. It was added that the NBA player had a history of abusing Gondrezick in the past.
Kevin Porter Jr. is due back in court in Manhattan on October 16. Ironically, the Rockets will play a preseason game on that day against the San Antonio Spurs
