Brittney Griner continues her road to redemption since returning from being detained in Russia roughly nine months ago.
The 32-year-old has moved on after being given a new chance in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury. Griner did not disappoint Phoenix, averaging 17.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.2 per game.
Her efforts have paid off following news that the 6-foot-9 player has won the AP Comeback Player of the Year award, per TMZ Sports.
Griner will be sharing the award with Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier. The 26-year-old was also cited for returning to action after sitting out last season to give birth to her first child, CBS News reported.
It has been a hard journey for Griner, who admitted that the whole Russian detainment ordeal changed her trajectory, ESPN reported.
"I'm no stranger to hard times," Griner said. "You're going to be faced with adversities throughout your life, and this was a pretty big one. You find a way to just grind it out."
Getting her life back on track was not easy for the nine-time WNBA All-Star. She had her share of injuries, dealt with some mental issues, and even had some run-ins with trolls.
Griner was able to weather these trials and is looking forward to staying the course. One big target for the two-time WNBA scoring champion is a chance to play for the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics, CNN reported.
"If I get the invite, I'm going to show up, of course," the two-time gold medalist stated. "There's no greater honor than playing for the USA, playing for your country. I've got some really good memories with Team USA, so I would love the chance to continue that."
