Jeff Wilson of the Miami Dolphins will miss the first four games of the 2023 NFL season after getting placed on the injured reserve due to multiple issues.
It appears the Dolphins were practicing due diligence to allow the 24-year-old running back to fully recover from several injuries he incurred toward the end of the summer, ESPN reported.
"We made the assessment he couldn't protect himself and couldn't be himself the way we know him to be. I wouldn't be surprised if he would make a return this season. We will let his body tell us," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel explained.
That four-game absence could be more than enough time for Wilson to recover. After missing the NFL preseason due to a rib and a pinky injury, Wilson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says that the former North Texas Mean Green will not be on the IR list for long.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Wilson may return as scheduled by Week 5 on October 8, according to sportscaster Josh Moser.
Wilson was acquired by the Dolphins following an NFL trade with the San Francisco 49ers last season. He posted 860 yards and five touchdowns in 2022 in seven starts across 16 games.
With Wilson out for now, McDaniel will pin his hopes on other players, such as Raheem Mostert and rookie Chris Books, for the first four weeks.
De'Von Achane could also provide a boost, assuming that he can come back from a shoulder injury he suffered in the Dolphins' second preseason game, The Athletic reported.
