Dennis Schroder of Germany is one of many NBA players seeing action in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and the 29-year-old guard is not disappointing.
The 6-foot-1 guard is leading the charge for the Germans, who are playing with a purpose, looking to erase the stigma of their performance at the 2019 FIBA World Cup edition.
Germany failed to advance to the second round at the time following losses to France and the Dominican Republic. They wrapped up that stint with convincing wins over Jordan, Senegal, and Canada, which helped them seal a spot in one of next year's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, FIBA reported.
In this year's edition, Schroder and company swept Group E, which includes Australia, Finland, and Japan. And while they have notably done better, the Germans know that things can only get better.
"For ourselves, as a team, in the locker room, we know what we can do and what we can't do, and I think when we get everything we have every single game, we like our chances," Schroder stated.
Looking beyond the FIBA World Cup, it also sets the tone for his NBA stint with the Toronto Raptors. After finishing last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, his second coming, the German guard is looking to start a new lease with the Raptors.
Schroder signed a two-year $26 million deal with the Raptors in July, the new guard at the helm following the departure of Fred VanVleet, who is now with the Houston Rockets.
After settling for lower pay, Schroder has finally gotten a lucrative deal, although he needs to prove his worth. If his current showing at the FIBA World Cup is any indication, the 17th overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft appears to be on the right track.
