Kings' Harrison Barnes Shares Heartbreak Over Tragic UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Shooting

Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes is disheartened by the recent shooting at the University of North Carolina campus at Chapel Hill, which occurred on Monday afternoon.

"This is heartbreaking. One week into school. Change has to come. Extending my prayers and thoughts to my UNC-Chapel Hill community," the 31-year-old said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The tragic event left one faculty member dead. The names of the victim and suspect were not initially released. Shots were fired in Caudill Laboratories at the university's campus at 1:02 p.m., according to CNN.

UNC Police Chief Brian James said it is too early to know a motive for the shooting. UNC has canceled classes for the rest of the day on Monday and Tuesday.

The shooting comes during the second week of classes at the university, which started on Monday, August 21, per the school's calendar.

Harrison Barnes is a former Tar Heel

Barnes played college basketball for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels for two seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

The 6-foot-8 forward started in 73 of the 75 games he played for the Tar Heels, averaging 16.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Barnes was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2011 and First Team All-ACC in 2012. His number 40 UNC jersey is honored by the Tar Heels, but not retired.

He would go on to be drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the seventh overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and won an NBA title in 2015.
