The Arizona Cardinals know Kyler Murray may not be ready once the new NFL season starts. To make sure, they have reportedly traded for Josh Dobbs of the Cleveland Browns to broaden their quarterbacking options.
The Browns traded Dobbs and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the Cardinals. In return, the Cardinals sent their fifth-round selection in 2024 to Cleveland as part of the deal, USA Today reported.
The 28-year-old play-caller broadens the quarterbacking options of the Cardinals.
Murray suffered a torn ACL last NFL season and is still on the mend. The 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is likely to miss the start of the 2023 NFL season.
When Murray's 2022-23 NFL season ended, the Cardinals turned to Colt McCoy. But if their preseason performance is to be gauged, Arizona has not exactly performed up to par.
One department that could help is the quarterbacking position. With Dobbs in tow, a three-way battle for the signal caller position among McCoy, Dobbs, and fifth-round pick Clayton Tune could help the Cardinals' cause.
Dobbs was displaced last season when Deshaun Watson returned from an 11-game suspension. He served as backup to Jacoby Brissett in those games when Watson was out and even started in two against the Tennessee Titans.
The Tennessee Volunteers standout threw 411 yards and two touchdowns in those two games, which the Browns unfortunately lost, ESPN reported.
Cardinals continue to retool roster with other NFL trades
It was a busy day for the Cardinals, who pulled off other NFL deals. One involved Isaiah Simmons, who is now with the New York Giants. Arizona received a 2024 seventh-round pick in that deal.
There was also Josh Jones, who is now with the Houston Texans. The Cardinals got a future fifth-round pick from Houston.
