Former NFL running back Alex Collins unexpectedly lost his life last Sunday night in a tragic motorcycle crash.

The 28-year-old was in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, while onboard his 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K motorcycle, traveling eastbound on West Oakland Park Boulevard approaching Northwest 33rd Avenue at about 10:20 PM on August 13, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Collins crashed with a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV driven by an adult female as the SUV turned left onto Northwest 33rd Avenue. The impact caused the former NFL player to enter the rear passenger window of the Chevy before coming to a final rest inside the car, the report added.

Collins was pronounced dead on the scene, while the SUV driver remained and cooperated with the investigation.

"Alex was cherished by his family and friends as well as supporters from all around the world. All who truly know him can attest to his drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality," Collins' family said in a statement released on Monday night via the Seattle Seahawks, the team that drafted him and the most recent that he played for.

The Baltimore Ravens, with whom the running back spent two seasons, also released their statement, saying that Collins was quick to greet everyone with a smile and that he was a genuinely kind person who carried a special joy and passion wherever he went.

Alex Collins spent five seasons in the NFL

Collins played college football for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks from 2013 to 2015, where he is second in the Razorback career rushing yards list with 3,703.

The Florida native was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks with the 171st overall pick. He spent his rookie season in Seattle before being waived by the team one year later.

The Baltimore Ravens signed Collins in September 2017, and he went on to have a productive season.

The former Razorback led the Ravens in rushing yards with 973 and six rushing touchdowns for the 2017 NFL season. However, he could not replicate the feat during the following year, which was cut short by a foot injury.

The Ravens waived Collins in March 2019 after he was arrested due to a car crash after he possessed more than 10 grams of marijuana and a handgun, which led to him being sentenced to 18 months of unsupervised probation. He spent the 2019 NFL season without a team.

The Seahawks came back calling for the 2020 season, and he spent the next two years with his former team. He finished with 108 carries for 411 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and nine receptions for 87 receiving yards for the 2021 season, his final in the NFL.

Collins recently played in the minor football league USFL for the Memphis Showboats, where he rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown in three games.
