Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach assured fans and reporters a month ago that a new deal would be reached with Chris Jones, who expressed a desire to have more security on the financial side.
A month has passed, but it looks like what Veach said from the last time was just all talk, as Adam Schefter revealed Jones did not show up again in the weekend's training camp.
The defensive lineman deliberately skipped the team's minicamp last June 12.
Is a new deal on the horizon? Chiefs fans need to brace themselves as Schefter said the two sides remain "far apart."
What did Veach say before?
Jones disrupted what would have been a perfect summer last month after winning the Super Bowl in February.
The 30-year-old is entering his fourth year in the league and looking to get a bigger bag after helping his team win the title by recording his best year as a pro. He matched his career-high of 15.5 sacks and recorded 29 QB hits.
Keeping him should be the most logical decision, and that's what Veach thought.
"[I] feel good about where we're going to be with Chris," Veach said in an interview with Harold R. Kuntz of FOX 4 News Kansas City.
"We'll get to celebrate tonight and have a good time, break tomorrow, and I'm sure we'll have great dialogue from now to the start of training camp and look forward to Chris being here not just for next year, but for a long time."
For now, Jones will be fined $50,000 for his absence. If he gets the deal he likes, the fines will probably be worth it.
