Former middleweight champion Jermall Charlo broke his silence on why his brother Jermell got the much-anticipated fight with Canelo Alvarez instead of him, which will take place on September 30 in Las Vegas.

The reason seemed to be coming from a financial standpoint.

"I signed a contract with Canelo too, but I gave it to my brother first so we both make money. We're going to both make money," the older Charlo said.

Jermell will move up two weight divisions to face Alvarez, and it could set up a match between the Mexican and Jermall should his twin lose the upcoming fight.

The highly-anticipated bout will be a clash of undisputed champions, as Alvarez is the king of the super-middleweight division, while Jermell holds all four major belts of the light middleweight class.

Jermall originally slated to fight Canelo

Jermall was supposed to be the one to face Alvarez in a canceled September 16 showdown.

However, reports came out that Jermall could not get in shape in time for the bout. The older Charlo twin last fought over two years ago in a unanimous decision win over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021.

Personal situations also enabled his younger twin to take the fight against the prominent Mexican boxer.

Jermall holds an undefeated 32-0 record, while Jermell has 35 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw.

Jermell himself last fought over a year ago, claiming a knockout victory over Argentine fighter Brian Castaño in May 2022.
