Former AFC Ajax CEO and Manchester United Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was rushed to the hospital after suffering from bleeding around his brain.

The past chief executive of the Dutch club is currently in intensive care, and he is stable now, Ajax announced.

The 52-year-old reportedly suffered the cerebral hemorrhage while on holiday in Croatia, and he was taken to the hospital by a helicopter ambulance.

Van der Sar stepped down as the CEO of Ajax last May after the club finished third in the Dutch league Eredivisie, missing out on a UEFA Champions League berth for next season.

Van der Sar: One of the best goalkeepers of all-time

The Dutch national is regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the sport's history, winning 26 major trophies in his career.

He spent the first nine years of his senior career with Ajax, winning the league title four times during the 1990s and the Champions League in 1995.

After spells with Italian club Juventus and English club Fulham, Van der Sar moved to Manchester United in 2005, where he is best known for playing under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He helped the club win the 2008 UEFA Champions League final over Chelsea by making the trophy-winning save in the penalty shootout.

Van der Sar's last game for Manchester United and top-flight football was during the 2011 UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to FC Barcelona.
