Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced his retirement from professional football during the end of AC Milan's 3-1 win over Verona in their final game of the season at a roaring San Siro crowd.
"With my heart, I want to thank you fans. It's time to say goodbye to football, but not to you," the striker addressed the San Siro crowd.
The 41-year-old, who has scored 561 goals between the club and the Swedish national team, has been praised for his remarkable longevity.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Ends Football Career at 41
Ibrahimovic, widely regarded as one of the most clinical finishers of his generation, played for multiple clubs in his career.
He played for nine clubs in his senior career, including two spells with AC Milan.
He started his career with Malmö FF, followed by stints with Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and LA Galaxy.
During his 22-year decorated career, the flamboyant personality won 34 trophies across several countries. However, the prestigious UEFA Champions League has eluded him.
After spending one year with MLS club LA Galaxy, seemingly headed for retirement, Ibrahimovic returned to top-flight European football for a second stint with AC Milan in 2020.
He helped Milan win the Serie A title in 2022, their first league title since 2011, which he was also a part of.
Ibrahimovic became the oldest goalscorer in Serie A history after striking from the penalty spot in a 3-1 defeat against Udinese last March.
