The Detroit Lions have released wide receiver Stanley Berryhill, who was among four players on the team suspended for violating the NFL's gambling policy.

The Lions made the announcement on Tuesday and the release of cornerback Mac McCain and defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor, who were not involved in the gambling scandal.

NFL Suspended Five Players

In April 2023, the NFL suspended five players for violating the league's gambling policy. Among them were the four suspended Lions players, including Berryhill and wide receiver Jameson Williams, who was the team's first-round pick in 2022.

Williams received a six-game suspension but remained on the team, while Berryhill was also given a six-game suspension and has been released.

Safety C.J. Moore and wide receiver Quintez Cephus were suspended indefinitely for at least the 2023 season, and the Lions released both of them immediately upon their suspensions.

The fifth player was Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, suspended indefinitely but still with the team.

General manager Brad Holmes addressed the roster decisions following the suspensions, and the NFL announced that Cephus, Moore, and Toney had bet on 2022 NFL games.

Meanwhile, Williams and Berryhill were found to have bet on non-NFL games from a team facility.

Berryhill joined the Lions as a rookie last season and played in four games, mainly on special teams. He will have to serve his six-game suspension if another team picks him up.

Williams, who missed most of his rookie season due to an ACL tear, was expected to play a significant role in Detroit's offense in 2023. Despite the injury, he was drafted 12th overall and made his mark with a 41-yard touchdown catch in Week 13.
