USC Reached Out To Nick Saban Before Hiring Steve Sarkisian As Head Football Coach? [VIDEO]

USC reached out to Alabama coach Nick Saban about any potential interest he might have in the school's head coaching football job before settling on former Trojan assistant and Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, according to the L.A. Times.

The newspaper reports USC representatives contacted Saban's agents to gauge his interest in taking the job after firing Lane Kiffin on Sept. 29. The Times also reports USC athletic director Pat Haden spoke with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and, at one point, appeared to be zeroing in on Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, but couldn't secure permission to meet with him until after the Aggies' regular season had ended.

The Times adds Haden was scheduled to meet with Sumlin on Sunday, a day after USC's loss to UCLA, but Texas A&M announced Saturday that Sumlin had agreed to a six-year contract extension.

A former USC assistant under current Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Sarkisian met with USC officials over the weekend. The Times also reports that Carroll and Sarkisian once sought assurances that Sarkisian would be Carroll's successor at USC, but after being rebuffed Sarkisian left for the Washington job after the 2008 season.
