Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin wanted to cut troubled lineman Richie Incognito as far back as 2012 after he was accused of harassing a female volunteer at a team charity golf event, according to CBSSports.com.
The website reports in a police report filed at the time, Incognito allegedly approached the woman and rubbed his golf club against her crotch and knocked a pair of sunglasses off her head. Working as a hole monitor, the woman also told authorities that Incognito had been drinking and was acting inappropriately.
CBS reports the incident was enough to draw the ire of Philbin to the point the rookie coach wanted to sever all ties with Incognito, but was overruled within the organization.
Philbin's stance came to light during recent interviews with NFL-appointed independent investigator Ted Wells, who is now overseeing the league's probe of bullying and hazing allegations brought against Incognito by Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin.
Incognito has been suspended by the team for 'conduct detrimental to the team' after Martin told team and league officials he regularly left him threatening and racist text and voice mail messages.
