Team USA is closing in on leaders People's Republic of China after a stunning haul on Day 9 of the Tokyo Olympics, with the Americans grabbing a total of four gold medals. Swimming and golf provided the glory for the Americans, who jumped up to second place in the Olympic medal leaderboard with a total haul of 20 golds, 23 silvers, and 16 bronzes.
China remained at the top with 24 golds, 14 silvers and 13 bronze medals after the ninth day of competitions. Host nation Japan dropped down to the third place with 17 golds, 5 silvers and 9 bronzes.
Team USA grab more golds on the final day of swimming competitions
Team USA ended its swimming campaign in the Tokyo Olympics with a bang, bringing home three gold medals on the final day of competition at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. Once again, it was Caeleb Dressel who stole the show for the Americans, adding two more gold medals to his collection to boost his tally to five in the Tokyo Olympics alone.
Dressel continued his dominance with a superb swim in the men's 50-meter freestyle, posting a new Olympic record with a winning time of 21.07 seconds. Dressel's third individual gold medal in Tokyo is a stunning achievement that only swimming stars Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz have done in previous Olympics.
Hours later, he finished his Olympics in style as he won gold in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay alongside USA teammates Ryan Murphy, Zach Apple and Michael Andrew. Team USA won gold for the 14th consecutive time in this event in the Olympics, shattering the world record in the process with a time of 3:26:78.
Dressel wasn't the only American to add to his gold medal collection in the pool on Sunday. Bobby Finke doubled his gold medal account as well, adding the 1500-meter freestyle title to the one he won in the 800-meter freestyle earlier in the week.
Just like in the 800, Finke once again delivered a final leg surge to defeat German Florian Wellbrock and Ukrainian Mykhailo Romanchuk by more than a second. Finke's victory meant that the Americans won gold in the four longest races they've all been included on an Olympic program for the first time in a Summer Games. Katie Ledecky also pulled off the 800/1500 double in the women's category here in Tokyo.
It could have been four golds for Team USA on Day 9, but the Americans fell agonizingly short in the women's 4x100-meter medley relay. The team of Regan Smith, Lydia Jacoby, Torri Huske and Abbey Weitzeil lost by just 0.13 of a second to the Australians, who posted a new Olympic record in the event.

Schauffele survives late drama to win gold for Team USA
Also winning gold on Day 9 for Team USA was Xander Schauffele, who pulled off a stunning victory in men's golf. Schauffele averted a back-nine collapse by birdieing the 17th hole on Sunday and then delivered a clutch par on the final hole to preserve the one-shot advantage over Slovakia's Rory Sabbatini.
Forced to layup on the final hole after his drive found the rough, Schauffele made the biggest shot of his life with his approach shot on the 18th hole. Schauffele landed his third shot just three feet away from the pin for par, ensuring the victory for the Americans.
