The People's Republic of China has retaken the lead after hiking up its gold medal count to 15, along with seven silvers and nine bronze medals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Chinese athletes added three more gold medals on the sixth day of the competition via swimming and table tennis.
Zhang Yufei started the gold medal haul of China with her golden performance in the women's 200-meter butterfly. She did it in record fashion after carving out an Olympic-record time of 2 minutes, 3.86 seconds. China's second gold also came from the pool with its women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay surprised Team USA and Australia for the gold after clocking 7 minutes, 40.33 seconds.
Chen Meng handed in China's third gold medal of the day in the women's singles final of table tennis. Chen Meng had to beat her teammate, Sun Yingsha, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, 11-4, 11-9, to keep the gold among Chinese lady paddlers for the ninth straight Olympics.
Japan drops to second spot in the medal tally
Host country Japan dropped to the second spot with a medal tally of 15-4-6 (gold-silver-bronze). The Japanese athletes have been amassing several gold medals and storming up the top of the medal count in the past couple of days, and they added two more to their collection courtesy of their judokas.
The Japanese have been reigning supreme in judo, with Shori Hamada clinching the host country's seventh gold medal in the women's 78-kilogram final. The other gilt and the eighth in the sport was bagged by Aaron Wolf in the men's 100-kilogram division.
Team USA dropped to the third spot with a medal tally of 14-14-10. The Americans added three gold medals to their tally, two from swimming earlier in the day and the remaining gilt from gymnastics.
Bobby Finke of the United States debuted with a gold medal in the men's 800-meter swimming freestyle, while Caeleb Dressel proved that he could win a gold medal on his own and not relying on a team when he dominated the men's 100-meter freestyle.
Sunisa Lee capped Team USA's Day 6 campaign by becoming the fifth straight American woman to claim the Olympic title in the women's all-around. Lee buoyed the Americans' hopes in gymnastics following the withdrawal of Simone Biles, who decided to prioritize her mental health.
Rounding up the top five were ROC (8-11-9) and Australia (8-2-10.
