Host country Japan has taken the top spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medal tally after finishing Day 3 with eight gold medals, two silvers and three bronze medals.

Team USA, which momentarily, took the top spot, settled once again for the second spot with a medal tally of 7-3-5 (gold-silver-bronze).

Erstwhile leader, People's Republic of China, dropped to the third spot with a medal count of 6-5-7. Rounding up the current top 5 were ROC (4-5-3) and Great Britain (3-4-1).

One of the biggest stories in Day 3 was the Philippines finally bagging its first gold medal after 97 years. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz handed the Philippines with its first-ever gold medal after edging China's Liao Qiuyun in the women's 55-kgs.
