New Orleans Pelicans sophomore forward Anthony Davis is off to a fantastic start, with averages of 19.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 blocks. He is arguably one of the best big men in the league right now, comparable to the likes of Kevin Love and Blake Griffin.

His fast start, however, may be derailed for some time as he suffered a fracture in his left hand during the first quarter of their game against the New York Knicks.

According to NOLA.com, Davis hurt his hand when he slammed it on the ring as he attempted to complete an alley-oop. "I am hoping it is a short-term thing, so I can get back on the floor," Davis told the website. "I felt pain. I didn't think it was going to keep me out. I am happy that my team battled for the whole 48 (minutes) and got that W."

According to the team, there is no timetable for the return of their franchise star.

Davis' injury prevented him from finishing the game, which the Pelicans won, 103-99. He was limited to 10 minutes of play scoring seven markers and grabbing four rebounds.

In his absence, forward Ryan Anderson stepped up scoring 31 points on seven 3-pointers while guard Tyreke Evans added 24 points to help the Pelicans reach .500 in the win-loss column.

The Pelicans hope that the injury won't keep Davis out for a long time. In his rookie year, the 2012 no. 1 overall draft pick missed 18 games due to various injuries of his knee, shoulder and ankle.
