Five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman faces numerous charges, including one on suspicion of burglary domestic violence, after the former Super Bowl champion was arrested at his wife's parent's residence in Redmond, Washington, early Wednesday morning.
Redmond Police Department Chief Darrell Lowe told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday that Sherman also faces suspicion of resisting arrest and malicious mischief related to the incident.
According to Washington State Patrol Captain Ron Mead, he is also facing possible misdemeanor DUI and hit-and-run charges related to a separate incident.
Sherman sustains minor injuries in arrest
Washington State Patrol received a 911 call from a construction worker around 1:26 a.m. PT about a possibly impaired driver driving his SUV into a closed construction zone. Police quickly responded and found the vehicle, which had sustained "significant" damage on the driver's side after making contact with a barrier in a nearby parking lot. After running the plates on the vehicle, police determined it was registered to Sherman.
Another 911 call was made concerning Sherman minutes later, with Redmond Police the ones to respond. At approximately 1:49 a.m. PT, one of the residents of the home told 911 that Sherman was trying to gain entrance into their residence with force. Police authorities soon apprehended Sherman, who sustained minor lacerations to his lower leg and ankle and was treated at a local hospital due to contact from a police dog.
The free-agent cornerback was booked at 6:08 a.m. PT Wednesday at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle. Although records show that Sherman was denied bail, a spokesman for the Redmond Police Department said that is standard procedure for suspects of domestic violence until they can appear before a judge.
In Sherman's case, that hearing will not take place until Thursday afternoon. The judge will then determine if there was probable cause for Sherman's arrest and set the bail terms.
According to Lowe, the domestic violence charge that Sherman faces, which is a felony offense, is because of his relation to the occupants of the residence and "not due to him physically assaulting a significant other." On the other hand, the malicious mischief charge is about the damage he allegedly did to his in-laws' front door.
Sherman's wife, Ashley Moss, made it clear that the former Seattle Seahawk didn't hurt anyone, telling the Seattle Times that he "didn't harm anybody" and that the "kids were not harmed in the incident."

Sherman threatened to kill himself, according to wife's 911 call
In Moss' 911 call that KIRO Radio obtained, she said that Sherman was "threatening to kill himself" and sent text messages to people saying he is going to hang himself." Moss also mentioned in the 911 call that Sherman "was being aggressive" with her uncle after drinking "two bottles" of hard alcohol.
Sherman's arrest was a complete shock, given his stature in the National Football League. He is currently the vice president of the NFL Players Association's executive committee. The 33-year-old is a free agent at the moment after completing his third season with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. It will be interesting to see how this case affects Sherman's free agency and his future in the NFL.
