At 1:00 p.m. ET the Minnesota Vikings (2-8) will face the Green Bay Packers (5-5) who are struggling to keep playoff hopes alive without their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers under center. The Packers are trying to get their first win of the season with third-stringer Scott Tolzien under center, and head coach Mike McCarthy has seen enough ability to stick with the former practice squad passer despite some losses. "He has a lot of good football ahead of him, but the reality is, and he knows this more than anybody, he has to take care of the football."
Even though Minnesota is 2-8 and out of contention for a return to the postseason, the game is still a crucial one. "Extremely important football game this week," McCarthy said. "It's a division game, it's a home game. We've had two home games get away from us. Part of the formula for success in any football season is winning your home games.
The Vikings have their own quarterback issues, but it's not due to a missing Pro Bowler. The Vikes have just battled ineffectiveness from every player they put out there; Christian Ponder will start today despite being pulled last week. "I'm excited to be out there again. I'm ready to go and healthy," he said. "When the pressure is on, I've stepped up. At other times, I haven't. I need to be more consistent," Ponder said.
Ponder may get help in this one thanks to the injury bug, which has bitten the hamstrings f Packers regular cornerback Sam Shields and Casey Heyward.
