Most NFL free agents have already signed with their preferred teams. A few marquee names, however, are still left without teams. Players like former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and restricted free agent cornerback Malcolm Butler still have no teams.

News has surfaced the past few days that Malcolm Butler is about to get traded. Recent reports have somewhat contradicted that news.

According to the NFL Network's Ian Rappaport, the New England Patriots and the New Orleans Saints did not have any talks regarding a trade for restricted cornerback Malcolm Butler, via a report from CBS Boston. Malcolm Butler last played for the New England Patriots in the 2016-2017 NFL season and was a vital cog in helping the New England Patriots win Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.

In a series of tweets by Ian Rappaport just recently, he said that the New Orleans Saints and Malcolm Butler are not that far apart in their contract negotiations. Ian Rappaport also added that New England Patriots are in a wait and see mode regarding the Malcolm Butler situation.

The New England Patriots won't engage the New Orleans Saints in trade talks unless Malcolm Butler signs his tender with the New England Patriots. The New England Patriots are also waiting to see if Malcolm Butler will sign an offer sheet with the New Orleans Saints before they can plan their next course of action.

If Malcolm Butler does sign the New Orleans Saints offer sheet and the New England Patriots don't match the offer, the New Orleans Saints would send their 11th overall pick in the first round of this year's NFL draft. I Malcolm Butler does not sign, the New England Patriots can have Malcolm Butler play out his tender in 2017 worth $3.9 million.

It's a win-win situation for the New England Patriots. Malcolm Butler has already visited the New Orleans Saints last week, according to a report from the Boston Globe.
