Looks like the days of NBA coaches resting their star players are numbered. The NBA front office is finally putting the hammer down on the not so popular practice of resting star players.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver sent a memo to all the NBA team owners informing them that there will be significant penalties for NBA teams that fail to give the league a notice in advance that a star player would be resting for a game, according to a report from ESPN. The memo also said that the practice of resting key players would be a topic of discussion at the next NBA board of governors meeting next month in New York.

Adam Silver also told the NBA team owners that they simply just cannot pass the responsibility of resting key players to other members of the organization, most specifically the head coaches. For Adam Silver, NBA team owners should be more involved when it comes to the decision of whether to rest key players or not.

According to Adam Silver, the other members of the organization don't have any idea of the consequences that may happen when they rest key players. Resting key players has an adverse effect on fans, business partners, and most importantly television viewers.

Resting key players is nothing new in the NBA. It has been a common practice nowadays in the NBA ever since Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs started the trend a few seasons ago. The San Antonio Spurs were even fined $250,000 back in 2012 by then commissioner David stern for resting Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Danny Green and Manu Ginobili in a game against the Miami Heat, via a report from ESPN.

Adam Silver's memo comes after two of the NBA's top teams, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, decided to rest their key players. The Golden State Warriors rested Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala in their match-up against the San Antonio Spurs.

One week after that game, the Cleveland Cavaliers did the same thing as they rested LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in their game against the Los Angeles Clippers. To make matters worse, both games were nationally televised games.
