From screenwriting to directing, it looks like Simon Kinberg is set to go for his directorial debut. And what a directorial debut it would be for Simon Kinberg if plans for a new "X-Men" movie pushes thru.

Though no official offer has been made yet, sources say that screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg is being eyed as the new director for the next "X-Men" movie, according to a report from Slash Film. Simon Kinberg has never directed a feature film before, so directing the new "X-Men" film would be a huge risk for both Simon Kinberg and the producers of the film. The only experience Simon Kinberg has at directing is when he helped Josh Trank in "Fantastic Four".

The producers of the next "X-Men" movie are banking on the familiarity Simon Kinberg has with the "X-Men" franchise. Simon Kinberg has been involved as a screenwriter and producer for several "X-Men" films beginning with the "X-Men: The Last Stand" in 2006 up to the last installment in "X-Men: Apocalypse". Simon Kinberg has also been involved in the "X-Men" spinoff "Deadpool", the new "Wolverine" movie, Logan and TV projects such as FX's "Legion".

Simon Kinberg, 43, is already working on the script for the new "X-Men" film. The new "X-Men" film is a follow up to 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse".

With Simon Kinberg being considered as the new director of the next "X-Men", the production company is gambling on Simon Kinberg to somewhat save the "X-Men" franchise. Although "X-Men: Apocalypse" was a blockbuster hit when it was released last year, critics slammed the latest instalment in the "X-Men" franchise, via a report from Roger Ebert.

No specific storyline for the next "X-Men" movie has been released as of now, but sources say that the new installment would follow the "Dark Phoenix storyline. The "Dark Phoenix" storyline was first introduced in "X-Men: The Last Stand".
