Atletico Madrid headway to Copa del Rey Semifinals holding for a 2-2 draw at Eibar secured a 5-2 aggregate win this Wednesday. They were being eliminated in the quarterfinals for the last two seasons.
Written in ESPN, Atletico, who are trying to win the Copa del Rey for the first time since 2013, were eliminated by Celta Vigo in the quarterfinals last season, and by Barcelona at the same stage in the previous year.
While on the other side, Eibar was playing in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals for the first time. In the 49th minute, Atletico Madrid took the lead with a header by defender Jose Gimenez. Host team took the lead by two consecutive goals on a 73rd minute by Sergi Enrich and 80th minute by Pedro Leon.
These two goals put Atletico in some pressure but it didn't last long. Juanfran saved the match with a lob over the goalkeeper in the 85th minute and scored the second goal of Atletico.
Unmarked Fernando Torres should have done better in the sixth minute when he headed wide from Gabi's corner. Correa's well-struck left-footed volley cleared the crossbar while at the other end Bebe's 20-yard effort go wide of the left post.
Miguel Angel Moya made a brilliant one-handed save to the left in the 26th minute. Eibar was ahead in possession at the end of the first half but Atletico seemed more comfortable in the game.
In the 49th minute, Atletico took the lead by the Gaitan's fantastic corner from left headed to the post by Gimenez. Eibar returned to the game in the 73rd minute with the help of Leon and Enrich who were succeed to level the game by 1-1.
Just after seven minutes, Bebe's cross was well guided by Leon into the bottom left-hand corner. Eibar took the lead by 2-1 and surprised everyone by their game but their celebration didn't last long as just after five minutes, Juanfran lofted a superb volley and leveled the game by 2-2.
As written in Yahoo Sports, Atletico had a 63% passing accuracy in this match, their worst of the current season in all competitions. The second worst also was against Eibar in LaLiga (67%).
On Tuesday, Alaves advanced 2-0 on aggregate by drawing Alcorcon at home and reached the semifinals for the first time in 13 years.
