Jonathan Martin checked himself into a South Florida hospital for emotional distress in the wake of his ongoing encounters with teammate Richie Incognito that led to him leaving the team, according to ESPN.
The second-year player has since returned to California with his parents, the website reports, adding that he was visited by Miami coach Joe Philbin while hospitalized.
ESPN said the specific treatment Martin received has not been disclosed, but speculated it was directly related to his belief he had been targeted by Incognito and other teammates for sustained levels of hazing and harassment.
During their talk, the website adds Martin did not disclose to Philbin any specific incidents of harassment or bullying.
Incognito has since been suspended by the team for conduct deemed detrimental to the team after representatives for Martin released voicemail and text messages he left for their client, including one where he refers to him as a half n*****, piece of s***."
ESPN added Martin remains in California, compiling a detailed document in cooperation with a league investigation into a string of alleged multiple incidents that he believes led to his emotional distress and exit from the team."
