Oscar Pistorius is headed to prison for six years.

The former Olympic sprinter shot and killed his then-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp back in 2013, but his initial punishment was overturned for a harsher one.

Pistorius admitted to shooting Steenkamp through the bathroom door of his South African home on Valentine's Day 2013, claiming he believed she was an intruder. Back in 2014, he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years of house arrest.

The conviction was overturned Wednesday and upgraded to murder, and now Pistorius is headed to prison to serve a six-year sentence, according to TMZ Sports.

Pistorius, 29, will be eligible for parole after he serves half his sentence and he was immediately taken to prison after the hearing on Wednesday.

Though he faced up to 15 years in jail, the judge opted to sentence him to six years due to the remorse he's shown in the wake of what Pistorius claims was an accidental shooting.

Pistorius has two weeks to appeal the sentence, but TMZ reports that the defense team is unlikely to do so.

As for Steenkamp's family, seeing the charge upgraded certainly won't bring their daughter back, but they may be able to find closure in the fact that Pistorius is serving time for the crime -- even if six years seems light for a murder.

Steenkamp's father, Barry, revealed during his testimony that he thinks of his daughter at all hours of the day and still speaks to her. He also revealed the terrible impact the tragedy has had on his personal life.

"I don't wish that on any human being, finding out what happened. It devastated us," Barry Steenkamp said via CNN. "I ended up having a stroke and so many things since then have happened to me."

Barry Steenkamp added that he and his wife, June, forgave Pistorius for what he did, but still believed he deserved a harsh punishment.

"You have to understand that forgiveness doesn't exonerate you from what you did," he said.
