Jason Pierre-Paul has learned from his mistakes and won't be celebrating 4th of July this year -- in fact, he won't even be in the country.

The Giants defensive end nearly lost his hand last year while celebrating America's independence last year and he won't be doing that again. Pierre-Paul was involved in a fireworks incident that caused him to lose a finger.

The incident led to a mysterious and odd silence between the former Super Bowl champion and the Giants, but they were able to repair their disconnect and he returned to the team while playing with a club hand.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News noted in a tweet that Pierre-Paul told him he won't be celebrating 4th of July this year and in fact, he won't even be in the United States:

The injury was very gruesome for the two-time Pro Bowler, who went into graphic detail about it months later.

"You see all your ligaments, your tendons, everything," Pierre-Paul told Sports Illustrated. "I saw how the hand really is without skin on it."

Though it was an absolutely horrifying ordeal, the defensive end didn't let it overcome him mentally.

"I could dwell on it, like, 'Damn, I wish I had that finger,'" he said, "but when I look in the mirror, I'm happy. Thank the Lord -- it could have been worse."

Pierre-Paul, 27, played in eight games for New York last season, posting one sack and 21 tackles. Throughout his six seasons -- all with the Giants -- the defensive end has 43 sacks, 226 tackles, two interceptions and two touchdowns.

This 4th of July, JPP won't be playing with fire again.
