A scary incident occurred Monday when Ryan Vogelsong was struck in the face by a pitch while batting in the bottom of the second inning.
The Pirates right-hander was starting against the Rockies in the makeup game following a rainout on Sunday. He was struck in the face by a 92-mph pitch from Colorado pitcher Jordan Lyles and remained on the ground for several minutes as medical personnel checked on him.
Vogelsong eventually was taken off the field on a cart with a towel covering his left eye. He was then taken to a nearby hospital.
Vogelsong, 38, is 1-1 this season in 12 games (two starts) with a 3.74 ERA along with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks.
The Pirates had no immediate update on his condition, but Voegelsong's wife, Nicole, thanked fans for their support on Twitter while saying he is stable and will be fine:
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the outpouring of love & prayers for Ryan. He is stable & will be ok. Pirates will update more tomorrow.

Pittsburgh went on to defeat Colorado, 6-3, taking two out of three from them in the series. Josh Harrison had an RBI in the same inning Vogelsong was plunked, while the pitcher picked up an RBI for getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Harrison finished the day 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base.
The Pirates improved to 24-19 with the win and enter Tuesday five games behind the first-place and MLB-leading Cubs (29-14) in the Central division. Pittsburgh also enters Tuesday in the second Wild Card slot in the NL.
