Jason Collins made the headlines last April when he admitted that he is gay, becoming the first openly gay athlete in any of the four major team sports in North America. He had just ended his season with the Washington Wizards and as an unrestricted free agent was hoping to sign up with a team.

Months after that revelation, Collins is still without a team and he has ruled out playing overseas or in the NBA Development League even as he awaits a phone call from an NBA team.

Marc Stein of ESPN.com is reporting that a source close to Collins, 34, is saying that the center is convinced he can still play in the league. The same source indicated that Collins has accelerated his workout regimen in his Los Angeles residence instead of joining another league outside of the NBA.

The website also noted that Collins was given the opportunity to submit his name for the NBA D-League draft, where other ex-NBA players like Ricky Davis were given a new lease of life in their hopes of making it back to the NBA.

But the center passed up on the opportunity believing that he would eventually find another team. Last summer, Collins was rumored to be heading to the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks.

The website also notes that some teams have been discouraged from inviting Collins to their training camps because coaches and players feared that they would be subjected to the media circus given the center's sexual preference.
