Detroit comes in in fifth place in the Atlantic Division and is four games behind the division-leading Toronto Maple Leafs while Calgary enters play in sixth place in the Pacific Division, 10 points shy of the first place San Jose Sharks.
The Red Wings snapped a four-game skid by defeating the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 on Wednesday.
"We had the puck a lot more because we executed out of our defensive zone fast, we didn't waste a lot of time in there and we got through neutral zone, and in the end had way more puck possession because of it and that's the right way to play," coach Mike Babcock said per NHL.com after the win. "Tonight was a good step for our team. Now we've got to match it."
The Flames lost 4-2 at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday and will look to bounce back.
"I felt that we had a good game," Flames coach Bob Hartley said after the loss to Toronto, according to NHL.com. "We are not very pleased with the result, but I don't know what we could have done more. Offensively we generated a lot. Our forechecking was good. Our puck decisions in the offensive zone were very good, but Bernier basically stole the game away from us."
Detroit has been paced by Henrik Zetterberg (six goals, six assists) and Pavel Datsyuk (five goals, seven assists), who each have 12 points thus far on the year while Daniel Alfredsson has three goals and eight assists for 11 points.
For the Flames, Jiri Hudler has paved the way by lighting the lamp five times and adding eight helpers for 13 points while Sean Monahan has a team-high six goals and four assists for 10 points while Lee Stempniak (4-5-9) and Mark Giordano (2-7-9) each have nine points, but are both sidelined with injuries.
In net, Jimmy Howard has gone 4-4-2 with a 2.45 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage for Detroit while Joey MacDonald has backstopped Calgary to a 3-2-1 record with a 3.01 GAA and a .894 save percentage.
The Red Wings look to expand on their recent win while the Flames hope to bounce back off of a loss when the puck drops in Calgary tonight.
