With NXT, Triple H has an eye toward the future, but if he's going to replicate the WWE's past marquee success, he may have to rethink its present.

The Roman Empire is in full force on the WWE roster as Roman Reigns has been tabbed as the guy going forward after getting crowned WWE World Heavyweight Champion for a third time at WrestleMania 32.

Despite the fans' resistance, the WWE has force-fed Reigns down everyone's throats.

Though the former Shield member has taken strides, he isn't quite worthy of being the guy to carry the promotion on his back.

His in-ring shortcomings and less than stellar mic skills hurt him, but he also has the unenviable task of trying to shed the stigma of being Vince McMahon's hand-picked guy, something that he hasn't been able to escape out from under regardless of his improvements.

WWE executive Triple H, who put Reigns over at WrestleMania 32 in the latest attempt to get the fans to react to him, recently discussed NXT and trying to eventually find the next marquee player to rival "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock -- two wrestling legends.

"Those talents make themselves in the biggest way," Triple H told 98 FM Dublin in Ireland (via WrestlingInc). "You train them, you teach them how to do this [and] you try to give them all the tools necessary. And that's really what we created a few years ago with the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida."

Triple H went on to say how the Performance Center helps shape the stars of the future.

"[It] is just the ultimate performance center, for lack of a better term, that gives them every tool that they could need to succeed in the WWE," he said. "And then, what they do with that is up to them. If they work as hard as possible and they're dedicated and passionate [about] it and work as hard as they can, then, the sky is the limit."

There's no doubt that what Triple H is saying is true and Reigns has worked hard at improving, but he still may never get fully over with the WWE Universe. It's somewhat ironic to see Triple H say exactly what the company looks for in a future star, while the guy currently on top doesn't seem to have the necessary tools to succeed.

To his credit, Reigns has overcome the adversity and is coming off one amazing main event with AJ Styles at Payback. But "The Phenomenal One" is a veteran who could wrestle a great match with anyone, so one has to question if it's Reigns' actual skills improving or his high-profile opponent raising his game to another level.

Either way, the WWE should listen to its own message and re-think this Roman Empire once and for all.
