After seeing one quarterback slip away from him, perhaps Jerry Jones will consider another signal caller he has an affinity for.

The Cowboys owner admitted after Round 1 of the NFL Draft that he attempted to trade up and had his sights set on Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch after selecting highly-touted running back Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 overall pick Thursday night.

Jones wasn't able to land another first-round selection and watched on as Lynch was eventually taken by the Broncos with the 26th overall selection.

Denver was in desperate need of a quarterback after Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler bolted for the Texans -- leaving them with Mark Sanchez as the incumbent starter.

"We were working real hard to get up there for the quarterback - Paxton Lynch," Jones told the Cowboys' website. "Frankly, give Denver credit. I thought we had it done. It was that close."

The Broncos traded with the Seahawks to land the pick and then selected Lynch out from under Jones. The Cowboys owner and general manager was hoping to secure the quarterback and have him develop behind Tony Romo, who has dealt with injuries in the last few seasons and is under contract through 2019.

"He's a top prospect -- got probably the highest upside in the draft," Jones said. "Congratulations to Denver."

Perhaps after missing out on Lynch, Jones will turn to a signal caller he's always admired, former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel. The former Heisman Trophy winner has had trouble steering clear of the party scene -- leading to Cleveland cutting him in March -- but Jones could take a risk by trying to sign him.

"I have the same impression that when he came out of A&M of what his potential is as a football player," Jones told Peter King of Sports Illustrated earlier this month. "I haven't changed my opinion of how exciting of a player that he is, how unique a player that he is."

Manziel, 23, is a huge risk, however, given his misdemeanor assault charge following a physical incident with his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley and his partying ways.

After being selected with the No. 22 overall pick by the Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel had nothing better to do on draft night this past Thursday but watch in a bar and take photos with fans:

It would be a risky proposition for Dallas to go for Manziel, but given Jones' constant praise for him, anything can happen.
