"Game of Thrones" may have returned to the airwaves on Sunday, but the author of the books, George R.R. Martin turned his attention to the gridiron.
Martin is a diehard Jets fan and after tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson announced his retirement, the "Game of Thrones" creator had to honor him. Martin released a tribute video where he praised Ferguson on a tremendous career.
"Ten years, could it really have been 10 years?" Martin said in the video, which was captured by TMZ Sports. "A career, it's been an amazing career. Congratulations D'Brickashaw on your retirement."
Martin also lamented on how he couldn't believe how quickly the time has gone by.
"But I don't believe it's been 10 years," he said. "It feels like just yesterday I watched you being drafted. I thought it was a great choice for the Jets and so it proved to be. Ten years without missing a game ... that's incredible. And I speak, I think for all of the Jets fans in the world when I say we're gonna miss you, but not as much as the Jets quarterbacks are gonna miss you. Have a great second life."
Ferguson, 32, announced his retirement from the NFL on April 8 and thanked everyone who was ever a part of his career.
"I would like to thank every coach, every teammate, and every fan that has shown me support throughout my career," he wrote, according to the New York Daily News. "I sincerely thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
Ferguson was selected by the Jets with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and made 160 starts in 10 seasons, never missing a game. The offensive tackle also played 10,707 snaps out of 10,708 in his career.
After 10 seasons that include three straight trips to the Pro Bowl from 2009-11, Ferguson knew it was time to hang up his cleats.
"You play your game and at a certain point, the game must end," he said via the New York Times. "There's a natural progression in sports. No matter who you are, there's an end."
Perhaps no ending is as highly-anticipated as the final chapter of "Game of Thrones."
