A trade occurred Thursday between the Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Avalanche that saw the Flyers send center Maxime Talbot to Colorado in exchange for forward Steve Downie.
Downie, who was originally drafted by the Flyers in 2005, makes his return to Philadelphia in the straight-forward player-for-player swap while Talbot will play in the Western Conference for the first time in his career.
Avalanche executive Joe Sakic said he made the deal due to Talbot's Stanley Cup experience.
"Maxime is a veteran forward who has won a Stanley Cup and has a lot of NHL experience," Sakic told CBS Sports. "We're looking forward to him bringing that experience to our club."
Talbot has a goal and an assist for two points through 11 games thus far this season Talbot scored both of the Pittsburgh Penguins goals in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals series against the Detroit Red Wings in 2009.
Downie, meanwhile, has one goal and six assists for seven points through 11 games in Colorado thus far this season and has accumulated 36 penalty minutes.
The trade takes place between two teams going in opposite directions. The Avalanche are one of the top teams in hockey as they boast a 10-1-0 record for 20 points and lead the Central Division with a one point lead over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
The Flyers, meanwhile, have the second fewest points in the NHL and have started out as one of the worst teams in the league. Philadelphia is 3-8-0 for six points and sits in eighth and dead last in the Metropolitan Division, 12 points behind the division-leading Penguins.
The Flyers and Avalanche don't play head-to-head until each team's first game of 2014 on Jan. 2 at the Pepsi Center in Colorado. The teams lock up again Feb. 6 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
