Could Roman Reigns be next for Bill Goldberg?

The former WCW and WWE World Heavyweight Champion hasn't set foot in a WWE ring since WrestleMania XX in 2004, but several of his fans have been pining for a return.

Goldberg defeated Brock Lesnar that fateful night in Madison Square Garden and both combatants left the company shortly thereafter.

While "The Beast" eventually returned to Vince McMahon's company, Goldberg has remained on the outside, despite some close calls regarding a comeback. In a recent video on WWE.com, the company listed six things it wants to see happen at WrestleMania 33 on April 2 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

One of those things was something that would surely excite the WWE Universe -- the return of Goldberg.

"Goldberg is in the one-and-done club," the narrator said. "He's destroyed hundreds of opponents, but only stepped in the ring once at WrestleMania when he defeated Brock Lesnar in Madison Square Garden. At the time, we never thought Lesnar would compete in the WWE ring again. Sure enough, he came back. Maybe 2017 will finally bring the same for Goldberg."

As for a potential opponent, the narrator brought up Reigns.

"So, who would he face?" he asked. "Well, there is a Big Dog spearing Superstars left and right who would be up for the challenge. Maybe he'll be next."

Goldberg and Reigns would make sense because, as the video states, both competitors utilize the spear. Reigns is also on a meteoric rise, similar to that of Goldberg, who had the WCW creative team behind him en route to a 173-0 unbeaten streak.

The WWE writers are just as big on Reigns as those in Ted Turner's now-defunct organization were on Goldberg - even if the WWE Universe isn't as captivated by the leader of the Roman Empire as they were Goldberg.

Reigns already has a couple of high-profile WrestleMania bouts under his belt, including a match with Lesnar in 2015 and Triple H this past April 3. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion may have an even bigger challenge awaiting him next year.
