Former NFL star Will Smith was brutally killed Saturday night after being shot during a road rage incident, according to multiple reports. He was 34.
The former Saints defensive end helped lead New Orleans to its only championship to date at Super Bowl XLVIII and spent 10 years with the team.
Smith was rear-ended while driving in New Orleans on Saturday, causing him to hit another car in front of him, ABC News reports. The man inside the vehicle that hit smith was later identified as Cardell Hayes, 28.
After the crash, police say Hayes and Smith exchanged words, leading to the former pulling out a handgun and shooting Smith several times. He was arrested Sunday and charged with second-degree murder.
Smith's wife, Racquel, was also shot, but her injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The couple had two kids together and Smith leaves behind another child from a second marriage.
Smith, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2012, was drafted by the Saints in 2004 and amassed 324 tackles and two interceptions in his career.
Shockwaves were sent throughout the NFL following Smith's untimely passing. Here are some reactions from Twitter:
