As Opening Day continues, the Cubs head to the West Coast to battle the Angels in Los Angeles.
Chicago is coming in off of a 97-win season that saw it win a Wild Card matchup and an NLDS series before falling to the Mets in the NLCS. Los Angeles, meanwhile, missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons after finishing 85-77 and in third place in the NL West.
2015 NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta (22-6, 1.77 ERA in 2015) takes the ball for the Cubs, while the Angels counter with Garrett Richards (15-12, 3.65).
Arrieta, who makes his first Opening Day start for the Cubs and first overall since 2012 (Orioles), led the majors in wins and placed second in ERA last season. Richards makes his first Opening Day start.
Chicago boasts a potent young lineup, led by Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant.
Rizzo finished third in the NL in RBIs (101) and fourth in OPS (.899) last season, while Bryant paced all rookies with 26 homers (tied) and 99 RBIs en route to the Rookie of the Year Award. Chicago added Jason Heyward and 2015 World Series champion Ben Zobrist to the lineup this offseason.
Los Angeles counters with a lineup that is carried by 2014 AL MVP Mike Trout. The outfielder led the AL with a .991 OPS and ranked third in homers (41, tied) and runs (104) last season. Albert Pujols launched 40 homers last season for the first time since 2010, and the Angels added Yunel Escobar and defensive wizard Andrelton Simmons this offseason.
