It seems inevitable at this point that Colin Kaepernick will become a Denver Bronco. The larger question is should he?

The Broncos and 49ers have agreed on the parameters of a deal that would send the disgruntled quarterback to Denver, ESPN reported. The deal hinges on Kaepernick agreeing to restructure his contract.

Colin Kaepernick, Broncos $10 Million Apart In 2016 To Make Trade Happen

Kaepernick and Broncos team president John Elway have met at least twice since March 15, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Kaepernick has been rehabbing from a trio of surgeries in Vail, Colo.

In Denver, the Broncos need a caretaker that can make the occasional big play and keep from turning over the football. They won a Super Bowl last season with an awful Peyton Manning and a mediocre Brock Osweiler.

Ex-GM Says Titans Should Dangle Marcus Mariota In Front Of 49ers' Chip Kelly

Kaepernick doesn't have to be great like he was when he burst onto the season as the 49ers starter in 2012, leading them to the Super Bowl. Chances are Kaepernick won't be great in Denver, as coach Gary Kubiak, though a quarterback as a player, is not known as a quarterback guru.

San Francisco coach Chip Kelly is. He won in Philadelphia with the likes of Nick Foles, Michael Vick and Mark Sanchez as his quarterbacks. If Kaepernick has it in him to return to the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks, then Kelly is as good a candidate as any to make that happen.

But the 49ers need Kaepernick to be great to have a chance at success. They've needed him to be great the last two seasons, and his play has gotten progressively worse.

This is the Kaepernick dilemma: Go to a stable franchise and accept being at best a game manager the rest of his career or take a chance with the 49ers for a chance to become elite again at the risk of being cut and likely never being more than a backup for the rest of his career.

Kaepernick took a big risk in 2014 by gambling on himself in signing a team-friendly contract, and that gamble doesn't look like it's going to pay off. Now, he has to decide whether he's going to gamble on himself again.

There's really not much mystery in what Kaepernick will do; he'll go to Denver if he can come to terms on a new contract.

But it may not be the best move for his career.
