The boxing world is spinning fast, with Miguel Cotto as one of the major forces keeping it turning these days. After an October 5th demolition of Delvin Rodriguez, the free agent Cotto is in high demand for promoters looking to put their bright lights in a match with him.
It appeared likely that Cotto would be moving up to middleweight to take on Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez. Cotto's made noise about wanting to win a world title in his fourth weight division, something no Puerto Rican fighter has ever accomplished.
Martinez too seemed jacked up for a fight; his adviser Samspon Lewkowicz said, "Team Martinez is focused on this fight. He would love to fight Cotto, it's good for the fans and for boxing."
Nothing's been set in stone, though, and Cotto left the door open for a lucrative fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez when he made comments to BoxingScene.com about fighting the Mexican superstar.
"I have always been willing to take on the big names. Canelo is one of them and I hope they can make this fight later on in my career. Canelo has what he has because he won his fights and he worked for it, and you can't look down on any opponent because of his defeats. I know the kind of quality that he has, what kind of fighter that he is. I will continue on my way and if we happen to cross paths later on - I'm ready."
The comments seemed to indicate a date down the road, but Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer seems hot after Cotto, if only to stick it to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. Cotto's had a long relationship with Top Rank, but an Alvarez bout is likely the biggest payday he'll find. With not too many fights left in the tank, he may be wise to chase the dollar signs.
As for Martinez, Cotto is far from his only option. Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin just won an entertaining fight against Gabriel Rosado on Showtime, and called Martinez out.
"I think if I had the opportunity to fight him, I think I would be the new reigning champion and I'll make sure he had to retire in the old folks home."
